Biography
Guitarist Scott DuBois’ music is described by Jazz Times as “fascinating”, by Cadence Magazine as “exceptional…faultless, a perfect gem” and by AllAboutJazz New York as “captivating music for the meditative thinker”. He has recorded two CDs with David Liebman for the historic Soul Note record label, Monsoon (2004), Tempest (2006), and three CDs for New York’s Sunnyside Records, Banshees (2008), Black Hawk Dance (2010), Landscape Scripture (2012). DuBois was also selected as a Semi-Finalist in the 2005 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. In addition to being part of the New York City jazz/improvised music scene for the past fifteen years, Scott has toured extensively with his quartet and other groups performing at jazz/improvised music festivals and clubs throughout North America and Europe. Scott has performed with David Liebman, Chris Potter, Andrew D’Angelo, Tony Malaby, Bob Mintzer, among many others. New York City’s Downtown Music Gallery wrote that Scott is, “one of the best and most adventurous guitarists in New York City” and Spain’s largest jazz media source, Tomajazz.com, calls Scott, “one of the best modern jazz guitarists.”
Saxophonist and bass-clarinetist Gebhard Ullmann’s recent CD was chosen by Downbeat Magazine as one of the best CDs of the year and after releasing more than 40 CDs as a leader/co-leader, he was chosen as a Rising Star in Downbeat in 2005. In addition to being a major figure in the Berlin jazz scene, Gebhard has also recorded and performed with Paul Bley, Lee Konitz, Han Bennink, Herb Robertson, Ellery Eskelin, Matt Wilson, Alexander Von Schlippenbach, and William Parker, among many others.
Bassist Thomas Morgan, from New York City, was a member of the late Paul Motian’s band, Steve Coleman’s 5 Elements and the John Abercrombie Quartet. Thomas recently recorded with the John Abercrombie Quartet for the legendary ECM record label.
Drummer Kresten Osgood, from Copenhagen, Denmark, has recorded with many great artists including Sam Rivers, Paul Bley, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. He has also toured with Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, William Parker, and Joshua Redman, to just name a few.
Together, the Scott DuBois Quartet performs DuBois’ unique, forward-thinking original compositions with an intense focus on group improvisation, interaction, dynamics, and the unpredictable.
