Frank Wright Quartet - Church Number Nine
A seminal album from saxophonist Frank Wright -- perhaps his greatest album ever, and a real landmark from the Paris free jazz scene of the post-1968 years! The album features one long track that shares the same title as the record -- "Church Number Nine" -- a number that builds in intensity with a style that kind of pushes the earlier ESP mode one step further -- using Ayler-like heads on the interplay between Wright's tenor and the alto of Noah Howard -- but also blowing up in much freer moments over the course of the 45 minutes of the tune.
