One of my favorite incarnations of the Jazz Messengers. This set features the 1958 Jazz Messengers live in Paris stretching out on 11 songs. Trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson and pianist Bobby Timmons formed a potent team, backed up by bassist Jymie Merritt and the powerful drumming of leader Art Blakey. This set gives one a definitive look at the influential band.

I've never been a huge fan of Golson, so I'd have to go with the Shorter Messengers w/ Hubbard, Walton, Workman. Or Brown, Donaldson, Russell, Silver. Gosh, there were a lot of fascinating interim visitors like John Gilmore, Victor Sproles, Keith Jarrett...Walter Davis Jr always brought something old/new/blue/... That concert with Barney Wilen where Bud Powell gets dragged up on stage is great. Reggie Workman, though; he left Trane for Blakey and he was an enormous asset. Prob my fave Mess bass next to Curley, Jymie. I love that Cliff Jordan/John Gilmore backed by silver/russell/blakey. Whatta section.
